Serving Proudly
October 27, 2006 at 12:49 pm | In Family | 9 Comments This is Jonathan our youngest son. He is currently serving in the USAF at an undisclosed location in Iraq. He doesn’t work on the Predator (the aircraft behind him) he is a weapons mechanic on AC-130U gunships. http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/AWA1/201-300/walk208_AC-130H/part2/walk208b.htm
To say that we are proud of him would be a huge understatement. We are inordinately proud of all our kids, and you can be sure that this space will have many posts about each one. God has been very merciful to Martina and I in that our children have all turned out to be very nice human beings. I say this as a true and impartial judge of their character, motives and judgment. Not a trace of parental pride or bias here… uh uh… nope not me.
So as I said, Jon is our youngest. He was our surprise baby…thus his name, Jonathan = Gift from God. When our second child, Jessica (PhantomBlonde) was born, Martina and I figured we were done. After all, we had: a mortgage, 2 cars, 2 kids (1 Boy, 1 girl), and a color TV with remote. All we needed was a dog and we were the perfect American family! Well, we had decided that of the two operations available, mine was the less risky, so after Jessi was born I would go under the knife. God Bless the bureaucracy at Kaiser! My appointment notice for the urologist arrived the same day Martina found out she was pregnant with Jonathan! BTW, Jessica was all of 8 months old when Martina found out Jonathan was on his way. Let’s just say that the thought of being pregnant and/or nursing for 3 yrs straight did not sit well with my wife. When the second notice arrived, Martina made sure we made the appointment! But that’s a story for another post.
Jonathan has always been the charmer in the family, he is easy going and has a ready smile. Even as an infant he could charm the ladies! When he was six months old we returned to Germany for the first time. For New Year Martina dressed him in a Tux-n-Tails jumper that made him the absolute hit of the party.
Because he found out he could get by on charm, Jon was an indifferent student, doing just enough to get by. He is very smart, he just hadn’t found anything to exert himself over. As a parent doesn’t that just drive you nuts? When you see all the potential not being utilized don’t ya just want to scream?
Well, I think Jonathan has found his calling. Ever since joining the Air Force I have seen a side of Jonathan never displayed before. Make no mistake, the imp is still in there, showing in his smile and his eyes, but now I see something more, Pride and Dedication. He now strives for excellence in everything he does, good enough isn’t any more.
He has become a Warrior. Un-tested in combat true, but a Warrior none the less, for he is over there, in harms way, willing, if necessary to go the final mile, to give the ultimate sacrifice. I pray that it never becomes necessary. I confess, that when I think about it, it fills me with trepidation. Some would say I lack faith, I say they are full of shit! I know he is in the protective hands of a loving father, but so are all the rest who lay down their lives for the ones they love.
Please God, bring my son home safe and sound. If you think me selfish for praying only for my son when so many others are over there with him, then you don’t understand the limitless capacity of our God. There is love enough. There is strength enough. His arms are not too short to encompass all who call upon His name.
Rememberies
October 24, 2006 at 3:24 pm | In Memories | 13 CommentsReminiscing
Since DJRickyG and Denise C. recently took us all on a trip down memory lane I’ve been thinking about things from my youth. So here are a few of my rememberies…
G.I. Joe – Not the wimpy little 3 inch figure from the 80’s I’m talking about 12 inches of All American Fighting Hero baby! I had 7 or 8 of the things along with a platoon’s worth of combat gear and vehicles. Then my mom gave it all away to my second or third cousins when I joined the Air Force. Arrrrrrgh!!!
1964 Cherry Red Mustang – My first car. It originally belonged to my brother. When he wanted something newer, my parents bought it from him and I “bought” it from them for $400.00. I think I even made a few payments. Then my mom sold it after I joined the Air Force.
“This concludes our broadcast day” Can anyone else remember when there were only 13 channels on the TV dial (And only half worked in any given city.)? And that TV used to go off the air at midnight? They actually used to play the National Anthem at the end of the day. Today the station would probably get sued for “offending” someone by daring to play that jingoist anthem to American imperialism.
The noon siren. When was the last time you had to duck and cover for a civil defense drill.
Yep, that’s right our great and brilliant leaders thought we would survive a nuclear blast by hiding under our desks!
Here’s your change sir.At McDonalds you could get a cheeseburger, fries, a small drink and something really remarkable…change from your dollar.
“E ticket ride” The admission to Disneyland was $5.00…but all that got you was into the park. All of the attractions took individual tickets ranked from A to E. E being the best and reserved for the Bobsleds and other good rides. In 1972, when minimum wage was $1.65/hr., an adult 15 ticket book (which included admission) cost $5.95
Here’s the breakdown: A-10¢ (1), B-25¢ (2), C-40¢ (3), D-70¢ (4), E-85¢ (5)
Children of the Day - Come to the Waters, first christian song I ever heard, waaaaaay back in the day.
So that’s a sample of what’s stuck in my brain, what’s cluttering up your mental closet?
0 to rock in 6 seconds
October 22, 2006 at 8:41 pm | In Church | 9 CommentsThis morning I’m sitting in church listening to Matt and drinking in the wisdom. When he got done it took me all of 5 minutes to become a rock, one that hit Martina right between the eyes. The good news is, about 60 seconds later I recognized it for what it was and appologized…profusely! I am now back in a state of grace and have been forgiven. Apparently I was only sipping when I thought I was drinking deep of all that wisdom.
So what is the quickest you have gone from “Blessed are you Simon Peter…” to “Get behind me Satan” ?
U asked for it!
October 22, 2006 at 5:50 am | In Uncategorized | 14 CommentsOkay, so a few people have been dropping hints that maybe I should start my
own blog. I can’t say that I really understand why, but apparently some
people think I have something to say. Well Duh! Anybody who knows me even a
little bit, knows that I’ve always got something to say, about everything
The way I see it, why let ignorance prevent you from expressing a strong
opinion. Not me! Full steam ahead and damn the rhetoric!
First a few disclaimers: The views expressed here are the opinions of the
management and we stand 100% behind our courageous correspondent, unless of
course someone objects, he changes his mind, or he is in fact correct. In
those cases he is on his own and we never heard of him.
Second…ummmm can’t think of a second right now.
Third…see number two above.
So who is Cap’n Jim?
I am a middle aged aerospace engineer born in Corona, Calif. We then
immediately moved to the east coast. My father was a pilot in the USMC and
we moved,… a lot. Starting in July of ‘62, I spent 3 1/2 years in
Indonesia where I was raised by the servants and survived the attempted
Communist Coup in 1965.
I endured high school, attempted college, and then joined the Air Force in
1973. Until then the best job I had was as a float driver in the Electric
Light Parade and Christmas Parade at Disneyland. Yes DJRickyG, I once took
the Mouse’s coin.
After technical school the AF sent me to West Germany where I met my future
wife. I say future because she was fifteen when I met her. We’ve been
married for 28 years and I can truthfully say that after salvation, Martina
is the best thing that has ever happened in my life. She is my best friend
(until 2 years ago my only best friend), my confidant, my lover, my soul
mate. Without her I am incomplete. Without her to inspire me everyday I
would withdraw into myself and fade away. To say that I love her does not
even begin to express the depth of my feelings for her nor the level of
commitment I have to her. She is my life.
We returned to the US in 1982 and moved to Riverside in 1983. We have been
building our lives together ever since. Along the way we have produced 3 awsome
children, purchased and renovated 3 homes and attended two churches. Our two
eldest are married to really great spouses and our oldest son has given us
(okay his wife did all the hard work) our first grandchild!
As you can see this post is sorta running out of steam, so I’ll sign off for now.
